Nathan Phillips Goodell (1798–1872) was born in Cazenovia, New York, the son of Ichabod Warner Goodell (1768–1826) and Lucy Phillips (1773–1814). After his mother's death, Nathan's father became a Baptist missionary and minister of the Mentor Baptist church. Sidney Rigdon succeeded Rev. Goodell as pastor. Nathan reportedly tricked his nephew, ¶ Warner Doty, into believing a written commission for him (Warner) came from heaven.
