to a grove to pray and is tempted by the powers of darkness but continues
to pray until a bright light appears in the heavens. His mind is "caught

Angel |
[¶ History: 1838–1839] Joseph prays for forgiveness of sins at night. A bright light appears, and a personage standing in the air. He is told of a record written on gold plates containing the fullness of the gospel as delivered to the ancient inhabitants of this continent by Jesus Christ. With the plates are the Urim and Thummim for translating the records. Joseph sees the place in a vision. The Priesthood is to be restored. The angel delivers the same message three times that night, and Joseph is also told he must not have any other purpose than building the kingdom of God in obtaining the plates. The next day, Joseph passes out in the field and the angel appears with the same message for the fourth time. |
