Two hundred militiamen from Livingston County attack the Mormon settlement at Haun's Mill on Shoal Creek, killing 18 men, women, and children. |

Far West (1) |
Joseph and Hyrum Smith go to Daviess county in August 1838
on report of two Mormons being murdered during the Gallatin election. Judge
signs statement that he would and agrees to meet with locals. Provocateurs
from Millport make threats, whip Mormon men, etc. General Atchison orders
out militia and disperses them, but the mob returns. General Doniphan orders
Col. Hinkle to call out the Caldwell county militia to defend Far West.
Mob surrounds DeWitt.
Governor and Judge King are petitioned while Rev. Bogart's militia
pillages along Log and Long Creeks. |

Assassination plots and attempts greet Joseph
in Caldwell county from his arrival in March. Governor, judges, and public
officials encourage persecution. Mob marches on Daviess county. Joseph
and Colonel Hinckle respond. Militia under Lyman Wight
opposes mob. Mob burns own homes.
Battle of Crooked River. State militia
reaches Far West, October 28. At Hinkle's instance,
Joseph and others go out to meet with officers but are taken prisoner.

Siege
of DeWitt |
Mormons begin to settle DeWitt, Carroll county,
Missouri, in July, 1838, but in August they are ordered out by vigilantes
from neighboring counties, and in October are driven out by an armed mob. |
