June 1830: Joseph and Emma, Oliver, John and
David Whitmer travel to Colesville, where several desire baptism. [134] On Saturday they dam up a small stream to create a baptismal pool, but
in the evening a mob, acting on instructions from "sectarian priests,"
destroys the dam. Oliver preaches on Sunday. The pastor of Emily Coburn,
Newel Knight's siser-in-law, tries to persuade her to leave Newel's house
and return to her father's house 10 miles distant. He telles her that her
brother is waiting nearby, but when this proves false, Emily runs back
to Newel's. The father gives the pastor power of attorney, which he uses
to forcibly return her to her father. |
|
|
Early Monday morning, Oliver baptizes Emma Smith,
Hezekiah Peck and wife, Joseph Knight and wife, William Stringham and wife,
Joseph Knight Jr., Aaron Culver and wife, Levi Hall, Polly Knight, Julia
Stringham. |

them various unprofitable questions, and bear with insults and thretenings
without number." |

prevent charges of activity in Broome county being introduced. Joseph
is acquitted but he is re-arrested on Broome county warrant and [136] is
hustled off without being allowed any food. In Broome county tavern mob
ridicules and insults Joseph and spit on him, tauting him to prophesy. |
|
|
Colesville trial begins next day
[July 1, 1830] with same lawyers on both sides (Seymour and Burch for
prosecution). Witnesses "swore to the most palpable falsehoods" but contradicted
each other, so court refuses to admit their testimony. Newel
Knight testifies
regarding exorcism. [138] Court room turns
in Joseph's favor, including constable. Joseph is acquitted, constable
helps him avoid mob that intends to tar and feather him. Goes to Emma's
sister's house. Takes Emma home the next day. |
|
|
A few days later Joseph and Oliver
return to confirm those who had been baptized. Mob gathers at Joseph Knight's,
so they retreat into the night with mob in pursuit. Presbyterian leader

¶ |
As soon as the Governor intimated,
or the news began to circulate, that “Mormons,” (as the people
styled the Church,) would be restored to their possessions in Jackson
county, (if they desired to be,) the “priests” of all denominations,
as the men behind the scene, with the mob, began to set their springs
in motion, and by their secret councils, and false publications and insinuations,
soured the public mind, and veiled the administration of the laws, so
that anything like a return to their houses and lands, or recovery of
damages for losses sustained, seemed as distant as the day of judgment.
The powers of wickedness and darkness walked hand in hand together, and
the Saints mourned. |
