Shame
on Newel for Nicolaitane band, secret abominations
Be bishop in deed in Adam-ondi-Ahman |
11 |
Let my servant ¶
N. K. Whitney be ashamed of the Nicholatine band and of all their
secret abominations, and of all his littleness of soul before me saith
the Lord and come up to the land of Adam Ondi Awman, and be a bishop unto
my people saith the Lord, not in name but in deed saith the Lord. |
|
"
thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate." Rev.
2:6, 15 (to Ephesians).
Nicholatine: A little-known sect in Ephesus whose members, according to Irenaeus, led "lives of unrestrained indulgence." The LDS Bible Dictionary repeats a commonly held view that the Nicolaites were antinomian, though the Catholic Encyclopedia maintains this has never been proven.
Martin Luther defined Antinomians as those who considered themselves exempt from moral (religious) law. The term was then used
to describe Gnostics. Alexander Campbell was accused of Antinomianism for teaching that the Law of Moses did not apply to Christians (1816). Anne Hutchinson was declared Antinomian (1636) for espousing the covenant of grace as opposed to the covenant of works (a position later taught by John Calvin. The Catholic Encyclopedia states that Antinomianism is "an extreme type of the heretical doctrine of justification by faith alone."
