Revelation |
|
|
|
|
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first
earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy
city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride
adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying,
Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them,
and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be
their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there
shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there
be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. |

Descendants of Manesseh to gather into |
|
DELUSION.—About two weeks since, three men,
calling themselves Oliver Cowdry, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris,
appeared in our village, laden with a new revelation, … [They] have
now gone west for a country they know not where, west of the Mississippi,
where they say is a holy spot, and there are to establish a New
Jerusalem, into which they say will be gathered all the [natives] who they
say are descendants of Manesseh.— They say they are led by the spirit
and will know the ground when they place their feet on it. |

New Jerusalem, city of refuge |
59 |
…
and with one heart and with one mind, gather up your riches that ye may
purchase an inheritance which shall hereafter be appointed unto you, and
it shall be called the New Jerusalem, a land of peace, a city of refuge,
a place of safety for the saints of the most high God; |

Glory and terror,
Zion |
60 |
And the glory of the Lord shall
be there, and the terror of the Lord also shall be there, insomuch that
the wicked will not come unto it: |
|
|
Flee to Zion |
61 |
And it shall be called Zion: |
|
|
|
62 |
And it shall come to pass, among
the wicked, that every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor
must needs flee unto Zion for safety. |
|
|
All others at war |
63 |
And there shall be gathered unto
it out of every nation under heaven: |
|
|
|
64 |
And it shall be the only people
that shall not be at war one with another. |
|
|
Wicked fear Zion |
65 |
And it shall be said among the
wicked, let us not go up to battle against Zion, for the inhabitants of
Zion are terrible: |
|
|
|
66 |
Wherefore we cannot stand. |
|
|
Righteous sing |
67 |
And it shall come to pass that the
righteous shall be gathered out from among all nations, and shall come to
Zion singing, with songs of everlasting joy. |

Save all you can to buy land |
4 |
It must needs be necessary, that ye save all the
money that ye can, and that ye obtain all that ye can in righteousness,
that in time ye may be enabled to purchase land for an inheritance, even
the city. |

City location to be revealed |
5 |
The place is not yet to be revealed, but after
your brethren come from the east, there are to be certain men appointed,
and to them it shall be given to know the place, or to them it shall be
revealed; and they shall be appointed to purchase the lands, and to make
a commencement, to lay the foundation of the city; |
|
|
Presidency and bishop distribute
land |

And then shall ye begin to be gathered with your
families, every man according to his family, according to his circumstances,
and as is appointed to him by the presidency
and the bishop and elders
of the church, according to the laws and commandments, which ye have received,
and which ye shall hereafter receive; even so: Amen. |

Expect to remain in Missouri |
|
After all the good followers
of Jo Smith from York state had got fairly settled down in this vicinity,
which Rigdon had declared to be their "eternal inheritance," Jo.
must needs invent another "command from God." At a meeting of
the tribe on the 3d inst. the fact was made known to them that 28 elders
must be selected and ordained, to start immediately, for Missouri.
It is said they are about to commence
an establishment some 500 miles up the Missouri where they contemplate
building the New Jerusalem, and they have expressed doubts whether few
if any of them will ever return to this "land of promise." |
