William Carter

Nephew of Jared Carter, William attends the Conference of June 3–6, 1831 and is silenced as an elder at the next Kirtland Conference. The following summer, Jared persuades him to be baptized (again?), but by 1838 William's name is marked as "denied the faith."

Born		Unknown. Ancestral File has "Abt 1828" but this is much too late since he is listed as an elder at the Conference of June 3–6, 1831. There is the possibility of another William Carter but this seems unlikely because all other Carters known to be members of the church in 1831 were descendants of John Carter (b. 1720 in Killingsworth, Middlesex county, Connecticut). Two sons of consecutive wives, Jabez (1752–1836) and Gideon (1766–1828) moved to Benson, Rutland county, Vermont, where at least two of Jabez's 11 children and all six of Gideon's joined the church. William and his uncle Jared were sons of Gideon and Johanna Sims.
		According to Ancestral File, William's parents were married February 28, 1813 and had six children. If William were born after that date but before June 6, 1814, he would have been 17 at the June 1831 conference—a not unreasonable age for an elder at the time. He could have have been later. The first date of a child born to his parents in the Ancestral File is 1819 (Harriet Amelia). Their other children were born in 1820 (Marrietta), 1821(Angaline), 1824 (Johanna), and 1826 (Nancy).
		On the other hand, if William had only been silenced there would be no need for him to be baptized in Vermont, as Jared urges. > There is nothing in Jared's account to indicate that this is the same William who had been silenced in Ohio.

William believes but not ready		went to Prudence Gibbses house one of the daughters of Zion where I found William Carter who is my Brother John Carters son With whom I began to converse about the work of the book of mormon he said he was convinced that it was the work of the Lord but he did not as yet feel prepared to obey the work
William grieves the Spirit Jared cries out mightily		I then told him that was an impropriety impacting of obediance to the Lord I also felt with in my own soul as though his situation for he had some time grieved the spirit by his disobediance and I having a sense of his situation felt to cry mightaly to my heavenly [Father] for him
Jared prophesies		I at length felt the power of prophecy to him & expressed to him that his was [103] the vary day that he would obey the commands if ever I then commanded him to repent & be Baptised in the name of Christ for the remision of sins <
William surrenders		he soon after this neeled down with me and intreated the Lord to have mercy on him he the same day was baptised & received the spirit of the Lord to his soul
