Council of July 3, 1834

Organization of Missouri "general Council of High Priests." One president (David Whitmer), two assistants (William W. Phelps and John Whitmer), and twelve counselors are selected for the council.

Council of high priests to settle issues High priests assemble to organize a "general Council of High Priests, agreeable to the revelation" to settle issues that "could not be settled by the Bishop and his council." D&C 102

Wilford Woodruff, a teacher, attended the meeting, suggesting members were present but did not participate.
President, assistants, 12 counselors "Proceeded to make choice of the President. It was agreed that David Whitmer should be the first President, "assisted by William W. Phelps and John Whitmer, and the following high priests as "Councillors." "On the 3d day of July I attended the Meeting at Lyman Wight's at which time Joseph Smith the Prophet Organized the High council. Joseph was Clothed with the power of God. He Chastised David Whitmer & others for unfaithfulnes. Said their hearts were not set upon the building up the Kingdom of God as they should be. After He was chastised He was set apart under the hand of Joseph to Preside over the Land of Zion And Wm W. Phelps & John Whitmer assistant President or Councillor." Wilford Woodruff's Journal 1:14.

    Wilford's journal entry was written at a later date, probably in January 1835, which may account for his conflation of meetings. The council was selected on July 3 and the ordinations on July 7, Conference of July 7, 1834
