Train Crossing Great Salt Lake Cut Off, At Sunset |
This great feat of modern engineering was undertaken by the Southern Pacific Railroad in order to eliminate one of the most difficult grades on that line. The Original line, via Promontory, was 146.68 miles from Ogden to Lucin, while the cut-off is but 102.91 miles between the same points, thus effecting a saving of 43.77 miles. At the same time 3.819 degrees of curvature and 1.515 feet vertical of grade were done away with. The new line is straight as the crow flies ov the waters of the Great Salt Lake. The project was brought to completion on Nov. 15th, 1903, approximate cost of $4,000,000.00. |
