D&C 64:37–40

September 11, 1831, Kirtland, Ohio.

Church to judge the nations.

Early manuscript: Newell K. Whitney collection.
The text below is from Joseph Smith Revelations, 160, but divided according to current versification.

The Book of Commandments (1833) appears to have been based on the Newell K. Whitney manuscript. But the press and most of the printed pages of the book were destroyed by a mob before it could be completed. The printed pages conclude near the end of what is now D&C 64:36. The completed version in the 1835 D&C contains three substantive changes from the Whitney manuscript. The changes are in verses 38, 39, and 40. Changes thereafter are in versification, capitalization, punctuation, and heading text. The 1835 and current verse numbers appear on either side of the 1835 text below.

Newell K. Whitney manuscript 1835 D&C
Behold I the Lord have made my church in these last days like unto a Judge sitting on an hill or in an high place to Judge the Nations 7b Behold I the Lord have made my church in these last days like unto a judge sitting on an hill, or in an high place, to judge the nations: 37 "pertaining to Zion" occurs interlinearly in the Book of Commandments manuscript, but in no other manuscript versions.
for it shall come to pass that the inhabitants of Zion shall Judge all things for it shall come to pass, that the inhabitants of Zion shall judge all things pertaining to Zion: 38
& all liars & hypocrites shall be proved by them & they which are not Apostles shall be known and liars, and hypocrites shall be proved by them, and they who are not apostles and prophets shall be known. 39
& even the Judge & his councillors if they are not faithfull in their Stewartship shall be condemned & others shall be condemned & others shall be planted in their stead 8 And even the bishop, who is a judge, and his counsellors, if they are not faithful in their stewardships, shall be condemned, and others shall be planted in their stead: 40
