On June 21–22, 1860, Joseph F. and Samuel H. B. Smith, en route to their missions in England, visited relatives in at Nauvoo and Colchester, Illinois. Samuel had visited them in 1854, but this was the first time in fourteen years that Joseph F. had seen his cousins.

It was the last time so many of the cousins would ever be together. Present were all four of Joseph's sons—Joseph III, Frederick Granger William, Alexander Hale, and David Hyrum; Hyrum's second son, Joseph F., (his first son, Church Patriarch John Smith was in Utah); and Samuel H.'s son, Samuel H. B.

Aunt Emma and her second husband, Lewis Bideman, were present in Nauvoo, and in Colchester, the two missionaries called on three of their fathers' sisters, Sophronia, Catherine, and Lucy.
