The temple,
commenced April 6, 1853 and completed April 6, 1893 at a cost of four million
dollars. It is 186.5 feet long by 118.5 feet wide. West center Tower is
204 feet high, east center Tower 210 feet high, surmounted by a hammered
copper statue 12.5 feet high, gilded with pure gold leaf. Hotel Utah, opened June 9, 1911 is a veritable White Palace, built of White enamel brick, at a cost of two million dollars, is 176 feet by 200 feet and ten stories high, surmounted by a tower, which rises four stories above the roof gardens and capped with a mammoth bee-hive, set on a pedestal framing, on each of its four panels the Eagle and Shield, all of which is illuminated at night by 6,400 lights. |
