Under Republican influence and management, home industries and enterprises
are fostered and protected, the country is enriched and built up, its
resources developed and its people put in the way of prosperity.
John Henry Smith as a Republican Protectionist:"Why should
I not be a Republican when that party has done more for the human race
than any political party ever formed?"
Daniel H. Wells' Republican Views:"It is a matter of good political
economy, for any community to become self-sustaining; and not only to
raise and manufacture what they need for their own use but also some for
exportation. Then the balance of trade will be in their favor.
"If a community wishes to become wealthy, it must manage to produce
not only all it needs for the wants of its own members but also partially
supply the wants of its neighbors. This is sound philosophy and political

Geo. A. Smith on the duties of the people of Utah to patronize home industries:"Why
send abroad for our cloth when we have the necessary skill and means to
manufacture it for ourselves? Why not let these mountains produce fine
wool.
"If we continue to import our hats, bonnets, boots, shoes and clothing,
and send away all the gold, and all that we can command to pay for them,
we shall ever remain dependent.
