McLellin and Samuel H. Smith began their mission Nov. 16. A month later William was taken ill with diarrhea and "a violent cold" but persisted in his labors until the 21st, when "my breast and lungs became so exceeding sore I was cast down upon my bed and mostly confined." They returned to Hiram and participated in nearly daily church meetings, Jan. 1–17, 22–25. On Wednesday the 25th he notes this revelation, then, "Thursday & Friday I retturned to Kirtland. I was sorely tempted of Devil But Friday night I made a hard struggle a[nd] shook him off my back." Saturday, "I wrote commandments & revelations at Father Smiths." [mclel], 66–70. |
