| To Kirtland |
|
April Colesville church leaves for Kirtland in several groups throughout
the month. They traveled overland to Ithaca at the south end of Cayuga
Lake, up the lake to the Seneca Canal and Erie Canal system to Buffalo,
arriving in May 1, 1831. Wind had blown ice into the harbor, so the party
was delayed two weeks. Mary Smith arrived with eighty members
from Waterloo. During a brief break in the weather, she and her party were
able to slip out while the Colesville group remained stranded. Jared
Carter took
a group of twelve or thirteen brethren overland to Dunkirk, where they
caught a steamboat to Fairport, Ohio, then to Kirtland. The main body
of of the Colesville church departed on a schooner on May 11, 1831, reaching
Fairport on May 14. |

| Joseph and Newel Knight's names in the Book
of the Law of the Lord |
|
[August 23, 1842] While I contemplate the virtues and the good qualifications
and characteristics of the faithful few, which I am now recording in the
Book of the Law of the Lord, … my aged and beloved brother Joseph
Knight, Senr.… and it shall be said of him, by the sons of Zion, while
there is one of them remaining; that this man, was a faithful man in Israel;
therefore his name shall never be forgotten. There are his son[s] Newel
Knight and Joseph Knight whose names I record in the Book of the Law of
the Lord, with unspeakable delight, for they are my friends. |

| "Loose conduct" |
|
[June 23, 1843] This A.M. President Joseph took me and conversed considerable
concerning some delicate matters. Said [Emma] wanted to lay a snare for
me. He told me last night of this and said he had felt troubled. He said
[Emma] had treated him coldly and badly since I came … and he knew
she was disposed to be revenged on him for some things. She thought that
if he would indulge himself she would too. He cautioned me very kindly for
which I felt thankful. He said [Robert] Thompson professed great friendship
for him but he gave away to temptation and he had to die. Also Brother [Newel]
Knight he gave him one but he went to loose conduct and he could not save
him. Also B[righam] Y[oung] had transgressed his covenant and he pled with
the Lord to spare him this end and he did so, otherwise he would have died. |
